Itinerary

Tour day-by-day

  • Full Day

Your journey begins with a departure from Cairns, ascending the mountain range into the lush, World Heritage-listed rainforests of the Atherton Tablelands. The first stop is the serene Lake Barrine, a stunning volcanic crater lake where guests enjoy morning tea at the historic teahouse. Afterwards, they join their naturalist guide for one of the day's highlights: a search for the wild Platypus. The group explores key creek systems where the guide interprets the behaviour of this unique and fascinating monotreme.

After the wildlife search, the tour breaks for lunch at one of two excellent local venues. Guests may opt for the historic Yungaburra Hotel, rich with pioneering memorabilia, or enjoy a fresh, café-style meal at Earth Kitchen in Mareeba, known for its locally sourced ingredients.

The afternoon takes guests from the wet tropics to the dry savannah with a visit to Granite Gorge to observe a colony of endangered Mareeba Rock Wallabies. This species is unique to the region, and this location provides a special opportunity for an up-close encounter. Following this, the 4WD is engaged for an adventure through the outback landscape to witness a magnificent, ancient Strangler Fig Tree, a true giant of the forest.

As the day concludes, the tour completes its circuit of the Tablelands and begins the journey back down the range, returning guests to their coastal accommodation.
