Travellers heading to the idyllic Frankland Islands can now enjoy a smoother, faster, and more sustainable journey thanks to a brand-new vessel, Wantaim, launched by Frankland Islands Reef Cruises. Replacing the Turtle Islander, this sleek 14-metre Naiad Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB) brings a range of upgrades designed to make the experience even more comfortable, immersive, and kinder to the environment.
Reduced travel time
One of the biggest benefits of the new vessel is the reduced travel time to Normanby Island. Guests can now expect to arrive up to 45 minutes earlier, giving more time to snorkel over colourful coral reefs, relax on the beach, or explore the island's rainforest tracks. The boat itself has been purpose-built for the journey, offering premium seating, panoramic views, and a much smoother ride.
Smaller groups
With a capped capacity of just 44 passengers, the trip now feels even more personal. During the river cruise section of the tour, the more agile design of the vessel allows it to get closer to the mangrove-lined banks, meaning better opportunities to spot wildlife like crocodiles, kingfishers and sea eagles. Guests still enjoy the same high-quality interpretation from the expert guides, who share their deep knowledge and passion for the region throughout the day.
Sustainable reef travel
The new boat isn't just better for guests; it's better for the reef. It uses 60% less fuel than the previous vessel, helping to significantly cut emissions. This is just one part of Frankland Islands Reef Cruises' wider sustainability efforts, which also include plastic-free operations, ongoing reef monitoring, and contributions to marine research.
The experience on the island remains much the same, but a few practical changes come with the upgrade. Activities like snorkel gear fittings, safety briefings, and activity sign-ups are now done on Normanby Island. A toilet is available on the RHIB vessel, with an additional bathroom on the island available shortly.
With its faster travel time, smaller group sizes, and reduced environmental impact, the new vessel reflects everything Frankland Islands Reef Cruises stands for: authentic, educational adventures that leave the lightest possible footprint on one of the world's most spectacular ecosystems.
